I began painting in 2001 at the request of my sister in law who wanted me to join her in a new hobby. Not having any art classes of any kind before, I signed up for a Botanical Watercolor course at the Seattle Academy of Fine Art simply because it stated that it was a good course for beginners. (My sister in law did not join me.)

I spent two years under the tutelage of Louise Smith, a beautiful botanical artist in her own right, before venturing out on my own. No one has been more surprised than me at the images that come to life when I paint. Well, maybe Louise.

One of the most important lessons I have learned is to paint from a live subject whenever possible. I am fortunate to have homes in two beautiful places, Seattle, Washington and Laguna Beach, California. Many of my subjects have come from my own gardens. A few have been painted from field sketches and photographs taken during my travels. For example, the Godetia wildflower was sketched in the mountains of Washington and the Blue Perennial Cornflower was sketched in Monet's garden in Giverny, France. The Cornflower holds a special place in my heart as it was sketched on my 40th birthday. I have nicknamed it "Monet's Flower." It is the only original for sale that does not come with the field notes (the sketch is included.)

My technique utilizes only watercolors on hot pressed paper. My strokes are primarily dry-brush with the addition of washes when needed.

I enjoy the company of my fellow Botanical Artists through membership in the American Society of Botanical Artists and the local chapter, Pacific Northwest Botanical Artists. You will not find a more talented group of painters.

I cannot image a better way to spend time than gazing at the wonder of nature and attempting to capture the essence of the plant onto paper.
